Following the announcement on 5 May, 2016 of a partnership between Apple® and SAP to “revolutionize the mobile work experience for enterprise customers of all sizes”, here at iNovar we thought we’d share our view of the likely impact of this announcement on our 2GoTM Enterprise Applications Mobility Layer technology (EnAML) – and in short it is NONE!
Reading into the details of the Apple announcement, we think it important for prospective customers to consider carefully what is being announced:
“This partnership will transform how iPhone and iPad are used in enterprise by bringing together the innovation and security of iOS with SAP’s deep expertise in business software” says Tim Cook, CEO of Apple but what is clear is that this announcement is focused on helping developers to develop new mobile apps rather than enabling the vast majority of SAP users to gain immediate and fully functional access to ALL of the capabilities of their existing SAP systems, as well as those from other vendors. 2GoTM, on the other hand, will support cross-vendor usage and provide 2Go users with full access to ALL of their systems regardless of vendor or version, not just those provided by SAP, all within the same app on their iPhone or iPad.
“In giving people an agile and intuitive business experience, we empower them to know more, care more and do more. By combining the powerful capabilities of SAP HANA Cloud Platform and SAP S/4HANA, together with iOS, the leading and most secure mobile platform for enterprise, we will help deliver live data to people wherever and whenever they choose to work.” Say Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP but what about all of those SAP systems out there which do not currently use SAP HANA or users for whom using the cloud is not an option? In a recent survey conducted by the American SAP User Group on HANA adoption, only 20% of those surveyed had started even a small project with HANA let alone a HANA/Cloud or S4/HANA one! 2GoTM users on the other hand, are able to use ALL of their SAP environments, even those long overdue for upgrade whether on premise or cloud-based and when they eventually get around to HANA will find that they will be able to use the power of this system without changing their mobility layer!
“As a part of the partnership, SAP will develop native iOS apps for critical business operations. These apps for iPhone® and iPad® will be built with Swift™, Apple’s modern, secure and interactive programming language, and will offer a familiar user experience with the SAP Fiori for iOS design language.” Or, in other words, users are being asked yet again to wait to get their enterprise systems to work on their Apple devices whilst their developers spend considerable amounts of time, effort and cost to deliver something which may well be a different UI to the familiar interface with which users are comfortable, requiring re-training just to replicate the same processes on their Apple devices which they already know how to do on their Windows PCs. 2GoTM, on the other hand, requires no coding and delivers a familiar UI to mobile users whilst also making use of the attributes of the device to enable mobile users to become even more productive immediately.
In summary, whilst the announcement of the partnership between Apple and SAP is clearly a step in the right direction to help mobile workers become more productive, only 2GoTM brings the benefits of its’ EnAML approach to provide cross-vendor, cross-format, FULL access to ALL of a company’s enterprise applications without re-development, without re-training, without delay and without increased risk of theft or loss of vital corporate information as no data ever leaves the company’s servers.
